Watch your StarPhoenix every month, as we track Debbie’s progress, as she works towards accomplishing her goals and dreams! Meet the new “Beautiful You”: Debbie Lone
At age 52, Debbie Lone has hit a roadblock on her journey to improved health and well-being. “I’ve spent the past five years trying to lose weight and get in shape, but I’ve come to realize that I need professional help if I’m ever going to progress,” says Debbie. The petite blonde knew she had to make changes four years ago when she stepped on the scale and read 199 pounds. “I must have gone over 200, but I stopped weighing myself at 199. I didn’t want to get on the scale after that.” A Type Two diabetic, Debbie knew that the extra weight was having a negative impact on her health. “I couldn’t walk. I’d be out of breath and straggling behind.” Debbie couldn’t even keep up to her 75 year-old mother at the
mall. “Other than osteoporosis, my mother is in excellent health.
She’s always telling me, ‘Take care of yourself now before
it’s too late, or you’ll be sorry.’” “I lost 30 pounds, over a period of three years. Then I hit my current year-long plateau. I call it the world’s longest weight loss plan,” she laughs. At 165 pounds, Debbie’s goal weight is another 40 pounds away. She is worried about increased risk of heart attack and complications to her diabetes. “I’ve done what I can on my own, but I don’t know what to do anymore. Right now, I’m walking, but I know I need to do more. I’ve cut articles out of the newspaper about weight training, but I’m just not sure what more I need to do.” Only 5-foot three inches tall, the extra 40 pounds make it difficult for Debbie to find clothes that fit properly. “All my weight is around my middle and upper back. No matter what I wear, the waist is always too small and the legs are always too big.” Adding to Debbie’s wardrobe slump was the fact that a good percentage of her time as a federal government trust examiner can be spent working from home on her computer. “I started living in my pyjamas or jogging pants. I really never had to bother with myself. I want to look more polished and start taking care of myself.” Debbie is also concerned about signs of aging that are creeping up at every turn. “When you’re overweight, you tend to ignore your body. I’d like to do something about the wrinkles, the sagging neck skin... I’d like to look younger.” Her son became engaged at Christmas and is planning to marry in 2006. “I’d love to look fabulous at the wedding,” says Debbie. As our new “Beautiful You”, Debbie has set some specific goals with the help of her nine professional coaches. These include losing 40 pounds through a healthy nutrition program, boosting her level of physical fitness through regular sessions with a personal trainer, and learning and practicing a new regimen of hair and skin care. Debbie will experience age-reversing non-invasive treatments offered by a leading Saskatoon plastic surgeon. Her smile will be enhanced by the latest techniques in cosmetic dentistry. She will receive full optometric services, including new eyewear and contact lenses. Debbie will receive expert advice from a professional wardrobe planner, to complement her exciting new wardrobe valued at $1,000. “When I found out I had been selected as the next “Beautiful You,” I was just speechless! I phoned my husband, I was praying, I was crying. I’m still trying to picture myself at the end of the six months; I just can’t grasp it!,” says Debbie. “My family is so thrilled for me. My daughter is a nurse, and she’s always talking to me about my health and taking care of myself. She’s very supportive.” Debbie is inspired by the phenomenal success Deanna Edgerton experienced as the first StarPhoenix “Beautiful You” candidate. Deanna lost 40 pounds and over 60 inches from her body. Her skin and hair were revitalized with professional treatments. Deanna’s wardrobe, hairstyle and makeup were transformed to reflect her lifestyle and personality. “Reading Deanna’s story motivated me, and I’m sure motivated many other people. I hope that I will also be able to serve as a role model for others. If I can do it, other people can too,” says Debbie. On the first Saturday of every month, the StarPhoenix will track Debbie’s exciting journey – reporting on her progress and the challenges she’s facing. Our team of professionals will share advice and knowledge that will benefit all readers and inspire everyone to improve their own levels of fitness, health and well-being. candidate, Debbie Lone has lots to smile about!
Now Debbie’s smile has been totally enhanced beyond her expectations,
thanks to services provided by Dr. Wes Antosh and the staff of Dentistry
on Queen, located on the corner of Third Avenue North and Queen Street.
A more beautiful smile was something that Debbie Lone had always dreamed of. “I had always wanted to improve my smile. It was always at the back of my mind, but I kept putting it off. It was one of the things I was really excited about when I found out I had been selected to be the next ‘Beautiful You’!” says Debbie. Debbie’s first visit to Dr. Antosh’s clinic involved a complete oral health check-up, including a careful examination of her teeth and gums. Dr. Antosh determined that Debbie’s oral health was good. “In general, Debbie was looking after her teeth quite well,” says Dr. Antosh. Debbie has Type 2 Diabetes, which can increase the risk of peridontal disease. Debbie’s treatment plan began with a professional cleaning by the hygienist at Dr. Antosh’s clinic. Regular professional cleanings, combined with daily brushing and flossing, will help Debbie maintain her good oral health. Dr. Antosh then employed the latest techniques in cosmetic dentistry to enhance Debbie’s smile. First, it was time to “Zoom” Debbie’s teeth, to make them white and bright again! Dentistry on Queen was one of the first practices in the city to offer Zoom bleaching, which uses light-activated hydrogen peroxide gel, power-assisted by a bleaching lamp, to whiten teeth in just 90 minutes. Now, Dentistry on Queen has introduced the newest advancement in this amazing technology - the Zoom2 whitening system. Certified orthodontic/ dental assistant Jackie Phipps explains, “They have added in one more cycle and changed the bleach formulation, to reduce any sensitivity to the teeth. It’s faster, but whitens teeth just as effectively. Hardly anyone who has had the Zoom2 treatment at our clinic has reported any sensitivity to their teeth.” Dr. Antosh adds, “The nice thing about Zoom is that it can be
placed where you want to place it, avoiding sensitive spots or cracks,
for example. That’s not true of other bleaching systems –
such as the gel trays or whitening strips.” Debbie says, “After the first Zoom treatment, I really noticed that the stains, yellowing and dark areas on my teeth were gone. I thought they looked great. Then after the second treatment, I couldn’t believe how white my teeth were!” Next, Dr. Antosh began restorative procedures, with Debbie’s four front top teeth required the most attention. Dr. Antosh determined that two older-style crowns, composed of porcelain with metal backings, were detracting from the beauty of Debbie’s smile. Her older-style crowns had developed “black line” phenomenon, revealing unsightly black lines where the porcelain material is fused to the metal substrate. As an individual ages and his or her gums recede, these “black lines” become increasingly visible. Dr. Antosh replaced the two old crowns with two new solid porcelain crowns by Empress. “Empress is a high-end porcelain product that looks very life-like and at the same time is quite strong,” he explains. The remaining two front teeth were transformed with Empress porcelain veneers. A veneer is a porcelain laminate which is applied to the front of the tooth, an ideal way to transforming teeth that are stained, chipped, dark, rotated or gapping. “It’s just like having a new facing of enamel on your tooth,” says Dr. Antosh. “The veneer is very thin, sometimes no thicker than a contact lens, so often it can be applied with very little preparation.” Several of Debbie’s molars had big silver amalgam fillings. Two
molars had extensive cracks and had large amalgam filing and posts. “We
replaced those with new posterior porcelain crowns by Empress,”
says Dr. Antosh. “My smile is better than I ever imagined it could be! My husband told me I have perfect-looking teeth!” says Debbie. “Dr. Antosh and the staff are so knowledgeable and they explain everything so well to you. Everyone there is so friendly and helpful!” Anyone interested in enhancing their smile through cosmetic dentistry is invited to contact Dentistry on Queen for a consultation. “I find that most people are fairly conservative – they want great results with the least possible amount of work. There are different things we can do to achieve the desired results and still stay within their budget,” says Dr. Antosh. “First and foremost, our goal is for people to have healthy teeth and gums.” This summer, Dr. Antosh will open a second clinic on Central Avenue in Sutherland, to provide convenient service for east-side patients. “We will be adding additional associates, as well as seeing patients at both locations,” says Dr. Antosh. Being a member of the Beautiful You team has been truly rewarding, says Dr. Antosh. “We’ve really enjoyed working with Debbie. It’s been fantastic to see an individual change so much, in so many ways – and seeing those changes reflected in her smile. I really think your smile is the most important part of a makeover. Your smile says it all!”
a lifestyle makeover / LAUNCH - September 25th Today, Deanna Edgerton has embarked on a six-month journey that will transform her life. The StarPhoenix has assembled an expert team of Saskatoon professionals – a lifestyle coach and nutritionist, personal trainer, plastic surgeon, hairstylist and massage therapist, skin and cosmetics expert, and a wardrobe consultant – who will assist Deanna in achieving a total lifestyle makeover! Watch your StarPhoenix, as every month, we track Deanna’s progress, as she works towards accomplishing her goals and dreams! Deanna Edgerton begins a new chapter in her life with a StarPhoenix “Beautiful You” makeover Meet StarPhoenix “Beautiful You” makeover candidate, Deanna Edgerton: a busy single mom of three beautiful children (ages 14, 12 and 3). While raising her kids, she also juggles a career, working for the past 19 years at Sask Tel. Deanna, like many women, has always put others ahead of herself, but has now begun to realize that she needs to re-invest in her own health, appearance and happiness. “I often don’t take or have enough time to make taking care of my appearance and exercising a priority in my life,” Deanna says candidly. Now in her late 30s, when Deanna looks in the mirror, she feels tired, overweight and frumpy. With her daughters reaching the teen and pre-teen years, Deanna has become concerned about setting a healthy example for them. “I want to be a good role model to my daughters. I want them to see that I do care about my appearance and am willing to discipline my life in order to achieve this goal. They need to realize that Mom is important too, and that the world does not revolve around them only. I am weary of becoming breathless trying to keep up with my three-year old son. After all, I’m not asthmatic!” Deanna is also looking forward to remarrying next summer, and is excited about achieving a new look for her fiancée Wade. “Even though I know his love for me won’t change, whether I look like I do now or 40 pounds thinner, it’s just kind of exciting to think that I can even offer that,” says Deanna. “I’d just like to look beautiful for him, in a different way than he sees me already.” Most importantly, Deanna wants to make lifestyle changes for herself. “I’d like to be able to look in the mirror and have a feeling of confidence. For me, physical appearance is not really the most important thing. But I’d like to not have to worry about it. I’d like to find a place where I’m comfortable with how I look.” With the help of her six coaches, Deanna has set some ambitious goals to achieve over the next six months, including a 40-pound weight loss, significantly increasing her level of physical fitness, and learning and practicing a new regimen of skin and hair care. To help offset the aches and pains of her new fitness routine, Deanna
will be treated to regular massage therapy. “I’m getting really excited, anticipating what’s ahead. I just want to get started!” says Deanna. “I think this will really change our lifestyle... that we’ll eat healthier, that we’ll think healthier and just feel better. I really feel the influences and the knowledge that I’ll be gaining will be such a gain in my parenting. The whole family is excited. And as our wedding approaches, I really feel that I’m starting a new chapter in my life.” “I really think of this as an answer to prayer. I’m amazed at this opportunity. I pray that I will meet and exceed all expectations with the team and the public in general.” On the first Saturday of every month, the StarPhoenix will track Deanna
on this exciting journey – reporting on the progress she’s
making and the challenges she’s facing. Our team of professionals
will share advice and knowledge that will benefit all readers, and hopefully
inspire everyone to improve their own levels of fitness, health and well-being. Beautiful You a lifestyle makeover / FINALE - April 30th/06 Creating a beautiful new smile for Deanna by Jeannie Armstrong With her outgoing and sunny personality, Deanna Edgerton isn’t
someone you have to coax into smiling! Dentistry on Queen, located on the corner of Third Avenue North and Queen Street, offers a broad spectrum of cosmetic and reconstructive dental procedures, including bleaching, veneers, crowns, orthodontics and jaw-straightening. Antosh is a Master Graduate of cosmetic dentistry from the Las Vegas Institute (LVI), considered a leading institution of cosmetic dentistry in North America. “One of my staff members mentioned the ‘Beautiful You’
project to me and recommended that we get involved. After learning more
about it, I said ‘let’s go for it!’ Deanna was game,
so we got started,” says Dr. Antosh. “The Zoom bleaching was amazing. I couldn’t believe the difference! When I got in the car and looked in the mirror, I said, ‘Whose white teeth are those?’ Dr. Antosh also provided me with a bleaching kit, with trays and gel, for home use, to maintain the whiteness of my teeth,” says Deanna. Dr. Antosh also offered to apply veneers to Deanna’s front teeth, but she chose not to go ahead with this procedure. “Veeners are like a porcelain laminate that fit onto the surface of the tooth. They’re fairly thin, anywhere from a half a millimeter to a millimeter thick – about the thickness of a fingernail. they’re applied on the face of the teeth and just over the edge,” explains Dr. Antosh. Veneers can even be used to instantly transform misaligned teeth – to a certain extent. “You can use veneers to straighten teeth and improve their shape, but there are limitations to what can be done without orthodontic procedures,” says Antosh. Because Deanna’s lower teeth were a bit crowded, Dr. Antosh then offered to correct the situation with orthodontics. “At Christmas, I had braces put on eight of my lower teeth, and then they were tightened every three weeks,” says Deanna. “We were able to straighten Deanna’s teeth in a short period of time. And now that the braces are off, we’re using Invisaline clear retainers to help maintain the position of her teeth,” says Dr. Antosh. Deanna’s new smile is now the perfect complement to her stylish appearance! Her experience at Dentistry on Queen has Deanna singing the praises of Dr. Antosh and his staff. “Everyone is fantastic! They went over and above any of my expectations. When I went there for the first visit, I thought that maybe I’d be able to get my teeth whitened. They did so much more than that,” says Deanna. “I also really appreciated the neat atmosphere of the clinic. It’s so homey – with a fireplace going all the time. It’s very comfortable. “The staff was very professional and thorough, and told me I could call them at any time with questions. And now, even though I’ve completed the ‘Beautiful You’ project, they have invited me to call if I have any concerns. The service has just been amazing!” says Deanna.
